Untangling mechanisms in the control of fat storage and mobilization

Review in JEB on “Non-adrenergic control of lipolysis and thermogenesis in adipose tissue”

Adipose tissue is a central metabolic organ which rapidly responds to alterations in the state of energy balance. Therefore lipolysis and re-esterification of free fatty acids, two opposing processes, are highly regulated enabling the efficient mobilization and storage of energy to adapt to energy demand or excess, respectively. Regarding brown adipose tissue, lipolysis plays an even more crucial role, as free fatty acids activate uncoupling protein 1 and therefore constitute a prerequisite for non-shivering thermogenesis. The extensive adrenergic and non-adrenergic control of lipolysis is discussed.
